As the academic school year is winding down, it’s clear the students in the gardening club are gearing up for the summer. Students at Merrill Road Elementary School have been working hard in their new school garden since March. But as summer break looms ahead, they spent their last day in the gardening club preparing to continue their good work while on break.
Students pulled up soil from their garden and decorated pots for the plants they chose to take home to grow during summer break.
The teachers who oversee the gardening club said the kids were sad to leave the garden behind. They didn’t want the club to end. This is such a testament to how easy it is to get kids interested in gardening and excited about nutrition.
The gardening club will resume when they return to school in the fall. Fortunately, the garden won’t be neglected because the teachers will check in on the garden during summer break.
I’m so proud of these little gardeners and I’m blessed to have the opportunity to partner with them. Merrill Road Elementary School is living up to its motto, it really is “A Great Place to Grow.”
